My name is José Devezas and I am a Master in Informatics and Computing Engineering. For the last few years, I've been a researcher in social network analysis and recommender systems, but I'm currently moving into the industry, where I hope to work as data scientist and a developer in innovative projects.
I have begun my research career at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, where I graduated and where I worked as a researcher for Laboratório SAPO/U.Porto. I was also a member of the Breadcrumbs team, as part of CRACS/INESC TEC, at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto.
I have dedicated most of my time to the study of community detection methodologies and the analysis of communities, but I have also done work on data mining, network analysis, information retrieval and data visualization. More recently, I have tackled problems in the areas of music information retrieval, recommendation and discovery, doing applied research at Laboratório SAPO/U.Porto, as well as pursuing my PhD in Computer Science at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto. Some of this work has become available in this website in the form of studies, theory reviews and development tools.
My connection to music has always been strong. I'm mainly a rock'n'roll kind of guy, but I'm quite open minded towards good music in general. I play the guitar and I feel like there is a lot to be learned from music and art. Some of these lessons can even be of use to science. Music is a mind opener, creating motivations and uncovering different perspectives of the world. Below are some of my favorite music albums, but, if you like statistics as much as I do, go and check my Last.fm account.
There was a time where I lived for gaming. I'm not ashamed of looking back on this. After all, there are some great examples of succcess in the gaming community. Take for instance Colleen Lachowicz or Gaming for Good. Having said that, yes, I'm a grown up engineer who I still enjoys his fantasy games! :-) I leave some of them below:
My remaining free time is filled watching TV. Here's some of the stuff I've been watching over time.
